Hello 2012!

Hello 2012!

"August Lights"  30" x 40" x 2", May 2012

This is a piece I just completed- and now it has a mini series- literally.  Someone ordered a mini size version of this.  It is so cute but is not done yet!

The original is being sold here:  Heather Howell Art at Yessy.com

To go into a little more detail on how I used the paints for this picture:

There were three different types of building that I did in this painting:
The first layer was the building of the depth around the edges and the light in the middle. This was done by applying light glazes of color and then creating “roughness” by scraping the paint back off. I made sure to add some softness back and depth with a paint brush before letting it dry.

Second building of color- I added glazes of blues and yellow to bring out the color effect I wanted, in the lightest parts of the first layers I added a green glaze because I wanted it to look more turquoise . I also wanted to add some depth so I added some darker blue paints. This layer was very serene, smooth and shiny. –For the glaze I use a 24 hour drying glaze such as Windsor and Newton Liquin Origin.
When that had dried I added the medium for the squares and allowed it to dry, then added more color, and dept -scraping again to reveal the previous layer of paint when I wanted it to show.

The third and last layer- started with a very light golden and white glaze in some areas. I highlighted some oval spots of white where I saw that lightness should be shown – these were placed randomly. Then I applied the thick golden and white paints and used a thin metal strip to smooth the paint. I added more when I needed it to last longer down the canvas and less when I didn’t.
There were times when I stood back, turned the canvas upside down and sideways and stood back, took pictures etc to see what it needed. Hope that explains a little bit of how this was made.
